Memories from the quilt show!

Our weekend quilt show was a big success! It started with a great article in the Arkansas Democrat Gazette!

This article brought in many quilt lovers, including my dear friend from many years, (and owner of several of my quilts), Sally! We had a great visit and lunch surrounded by beautiful quilts and talented quilters!

The photo from the article shows the winning quilt, "Best in Show", in bright pastel lollipop trees, is from a pattern and fabrics from the Glorious Color website. Nora executed it beautifully!

 

Another quilt they offer was interpreted into our viewer's choice! "Pande" from the "Pandamonium" appliqué pattern, below. This is the pattern photo, not the one from our show....I don't take many photos!

On a quieter note, but with fabulous quilting, is this "Convergence" quilt! Photo shows maker of the quilt top, Sheila and the long-arm quilter Sonja!

[I didn't photograph mine, or any (these photos are borrowed from Facebook!), because I have posted all of my quilts here already! I hade 5 quilts hanging.]

I did some shopping, getting fun fabrics with monster trucks,airplanes, traffic signs, guinea hens! One must support the vendors!

I have already made 2 toddler T-shirt dresses from the fun fabric!

I used some rick rack from Mom's stash....3 yards (package) of cotton no-iron rick rack was 25 cents! Today we pay 10 times that much for 2.5 yards of polyester rick rack. That was1969!

 

 

And near the end of the show there was a drawing for the winner of the donation quilt....a sampler quilt with blocks made by many guild members.

 

The name drawn was on a ticket I had sold....to Alex MacDonald who had worked with me at Hancock's!

He was happy to have won the quilt, which I left at Hancock's break room for him to find!

Still going strong on the quilt vibe, I am working again on my flower garden quilt, and piecing hexagons!

Final review of the quilts I had in the show...above, pieced with selvedges and strings, " Pink Lemonade".

"Scrappy Mountain Majesty"

Time span quilt with blocks made by my grandmother, appliqued by my mother and quilted by me!

" Chinese coins" a Strippy quilt of Riley Blake fabric.

And "Vintage Spin" from a pattern which you can find I the book, "Adding Layers" by Kathy Doughy.

 

Projects for cold winter days!

 

An ice storm just south of us hit the area where my brother farms. This photo of an old iron bridge near his home was on the local news. It is so beautiful, but not too much fun! The ice breaks the power lines, and homes are then hard to heat! Fortunately, they have a cast iron wood burning stove!

I stay "in" a lot when the temperature is below freezing outside. I turn on the heat in the sewing room and spend time working on piecing blocks!

Here is one which I am working on now...called "Dutch Breeze". Very scrappy and easy!

It is from a McCall's Scrappy Quilts magazine.

More Dutch Breeze blocks today! This magazine has the pattern for the "Haiku Charm" quilt which I made last week, with my Japanese indigos!

And it has a pattern using Japanese taupes which I also plan to make!

This will be another easy, fun small quilt!

When I make the Dutch Breeze blocks, I end up with even smaller little scraps, pieced in threes! So I make some irregular little 9 patches....these will be in a quilt with lots of natural linen...a little Zakka* quilt, or maybe 2! For the small quilt auction which will be at the quilt show!

As the quilt show approaches, ( in April) I have been sewing hanging sleeves and labels on the ones which I will hang in the show. Here they are!

 

 

 

 

 

April quilt show

 

We had our local guild quilt show 10 days ago.  It was fun!
Above a bright Lone Star quilt by Paula Mariedaughter, marks the edge of a display of many 8 pointed star quilts.....

 

Rustic doll beds and chairs were included!

 

This was my favorite crib quilt, by Adele Atha!

 

This is a fun quilt which I made and machine quilted.  Mother sewed on the binding before her stroke. Of course, that makes it special to me now!

 

[I have several more photos of my quilts....but I swear, Windows 8 photo gallery is hiding them!  I can find and edit them in the gallery, but when I go to upload them, they won't appear.

Above, sold to my good friend Lizzie, is "Victory Garden", based on the British flag.  The quilt pattern by that name can be found and purchased here !

 

This applique quilt from "Piece O Cake" designs was a block of the month from 1994. The setting with the colorful diamonds and prairie point edge are my ideas. This is hand applique and hand quilted by myself!

 

Here is a small quilt with many pieces, The Fonthill Quilt is a pattern from Kaffe Fassett. It is machine pieced and hand-quilted by me!

 

Mostly solids, this is a contemporary quilt which I machine pieced using improvisational techniques...that is chunk it together and cut down to the correct block size! Machine pieced and machine quilted ( with colorful bright variegated thread and lots of points-in the lattice- and circles-on the blocks!)

Midweek update:

We were out to get some exercise and enjoy the balmy weather...

This nursery rhyme illustration is a graphic picture of our hike down the back side of Mt. Seqouyah on Sunday (Mr. Pear=Jack).....except I didn't "come tumbling after".

Mr. Pear had a head over heels landing from an attempt to walk across a fallen tree trunk which was blocking the trail. It was scary to see him ...almost slow motion and I was not close enough to break his fall.... Fortunately, after carefully accessing the situation, he was able to walk out of the woods on his own (with me for morale). He has since had an MRI and which showed no serious injury. He is sore and has a stiff neck but is now back at work ( so I can get back to this blog!!)and on Rxs for a few days. I am truly thankful that I have him, in good shape. This shows me how quickly things could change!

Last night was the artist's reception for my friend, Paula Mariedaughter. Over 50 of Paula's quilts are on exhibit at our Art Center of the Ozarks. Paula taught classes and wrote the newsletter for my quilt shop during most of the years we were in business! She is a good friend and a very talented artist.

It was good to see so many quilters from this area attending her opening!

Now to get away from the computer and set up that sewing machine!
