Birthday girl gets her quilt.

Life is VERY hectic here at Laura's but she finally sat down to open a present or two on her birthday yesterday evening! Here she is enjoying her new quilt from me, the "Lorna Doone" quilt from a kit of Kaffe Fassett fabrics. [The kit was purchased from the Glorious Color website after Kaffe had been in our area, teaching and lecturing!]

3 of her 4 children were here too! (They are not too happy as we are about to go out to dinner and leave them with the sitter!)

The quilt is Queen size and the colors are perfect for our May Day birthday daughter!

It was beautifully and creatively long arm machine quilted by Sonja Koch of Fayetteville, AR!

You can read about Sonja's work here---- http://sosews.com!

This is the only quilt I ever made from a kit, and I still had to change out the border and binding! Kaffe's fabrics are SO colorful and beautiful, and with the soft aqua dot they become my preferred palette of light bright pastel colors!

More from Laura's....

We were playing around in her bedroom doing yoga poses and she caught it with her camera.....then she put it on Facebook...not bad for "old folks"!

Little Sophie is a "travel agent in training".....taking over her mother's desk.

Nina is the "artist in training", using a water brush and showing me how to make polka dots!

Then, I had a peaceful moment on the deck, doing my own watercolor sketch of the lake.

This afternoon we get to see our 7 year- old grandson, Bindley, play in a soccer match! Photos to follow, I'm sure!

Spring break then and now! Making plans...

Years ago, my daughter's first spring break....we drove north of Little Rock to see the daffodils at Wye Mountain. These were planted years ago and have naturalized, spreading more every year! I did an earlier post about this in March of 2008.... In case you remember! LOL!

This year, she is far away and planning her own Spring Break trip with her 4 children, hubby and nanny!
No, they aren't coming here, but to Virginia to visit godparents! A good thing!

~~~~~~~~~~~
The warmer and longer spring days led Mr. P and me to make a trip to nearby Eureka Springs on Saturday....hope to have more photos (of daffodils and old barns) to post soon, but for now, I'll just show my choice of shoes for the day.
My red and purple Mary Janes! Ever the child at heart, I love these (and my red cowgirl boots too!)
~~~~~~~~~

Further plans for this week include a trip to a newly opened local tea shoppe! I hope to enlist some friends and maybe some of their grandchildren to come too...

I will try the matcha.....and perhaps bring some home, as I have been seeing recipes for coconut ice cream with matcha, gluten free mug cakes with matcha....!!!

 Matcha mug cake recipe is HERE! [Photo from A Calculated Whisk]

Matcha is finely ground green tea leaves from Japan. It has 10x the antioxidants of most tea!

                   ~~~~~~~~~~~~~
W are trying something new in the laundry....instead of detergent.
This laundry ball goes inthe wash with the clothes....and supposedly make the water molecules so efficient that suds are no longer needed. My first load is in the dryer...have my fingers crossed!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

I am now crocheting a striped blanket. I had all this yarn left from a granny square delight last year!

This is easier than all those granny squares! And no joining together to finish!

More needlework...
I recently picked up this "Lorna Doone" quilt ( from a kit using Kaffe Fassett fabrics,,,except for my own choice of border and binding!) from long arm quilter Sonja Koch.

Now I am sewing on the binding! A colorful batik which should wear well. (Not sure I really like batiks with patterns like this....so much like tie-dye! but it works here!) Below, you can see the floral striped backing too.

Here is a photo of a kindred spirit....I just love this! Her life may be hard, but she escapes into beauty!
gotta love those chickens too!

The quilt kit came today!

I ordered this kit from Glorious Color web page.....the Lorna Doone quilt. It came today!

Here is how the kit looks....

My friend Lizzie has the book with the pattern...so soon I can start to cut and sew it!!!

What fun!

Common threads

I'm finally finishing my "Fonthill" quilt from Kaffe Fassett's book, Passionate Patchwork !

I have never made so many half-square triangle pieces!

 Last year, as I was working on the quilt, I came across this article in June 2011 Family Circle magazine. About Cynthia Kerr who started a charity making pillow cases for hospitalized children. ConKerr Cancer, One Million Pillow Cases.

In the article she is shown standing in front of a wonderful quilt.....

it's the "Fonthill" pattern from the book by Kaffe! Her's is so pretty! I was inspired!

This week, I bought fabric for 4 pillowcases. ( 3/4 YARD MAIN FABRIC AND 1/3 YARD CONTRAST FOR EACH)

 And by following Youtube directions on making the pillow cases, I have 4 ready to send!

 [Dogs and cats, Strawberry Shortcake, and small pirates!]

Now, back to reading my library book, Bel Canto by Anne Patchett.  A very good read!
