Ozark Folk Ways fiber arts festival

This was a beautiful cooler morning! My friend Suzanne drove us to Winslow, Arkansas (population 300+). It was the day of their fiber arts festival at the Ozark Folk Ways center. It is in this large older native stone building, once a home and then for a brief time, a convent....but the focus today was fiber, glorious fiber!

The building is in the back of this photo....which shows how the trees were "yarn bombed" with knit and crochet!
Suzanne taking some photos too!

The sign out by the road had this hexagon beauty!
Inside there were antique quilts.

And some peddler dolls made in the 1940's. I know that collecting those baskets of merchandise for the dolls is part of the fun of making them! I once worked on making a peddler doll, myself.
This was a quilt called a wedding quilt, which featured interesting textiles from Japan...
It is a wonderful example of sashiko stitching, the white thread on the indigo.

Spinning and weaving are local crafts represented...
Hand spun yarn knits up beautifully!

Visitors were often wearing beautiful textiles too!
Lacemaking is demonstrated!
There was a room of quilts offered for sale!
Basket makers and painters also had their work for sale!

Vines and bittersweet decorate the ceiling for the season!

We had a very good time, I am so glad we took the time to go!

Loving lace!!!

I love lace for everyday wear....with jeans for instance....

It started last summer when I searched and searched for cotton lace yardage! Finally I found and ordered some.....now how to use it!????

Here are some inspiring photos....

some of these require lace with a bit of stretch....I found some, mostly cotton in fiber content ...in Jo Ann's bridal department!

Can hardly wait to use this!

Meanwhile, my aunt and I both ordered this wonderful lace cardigan from ACORN TV catalog.

We ordered a large...but guess what????? They ran small!!!! So by opening the underarm and adding more lace (!) I am altering these into even more wonderful cardigans!!!

Now to leave this iPad and organize that sewing room so that I can enjoy exploring more lacy ideas!

A collage in progress for the round robin art journal.

Using fabric, lace (sewn on a Brother embroidery machine at work, the PR650), magazine photo, a foil wrapper from a DOVE dark chocolate Easter egg....these pages are evolving for Serena's art journal which arrived a couple of days ago.
[Check my "Arty Collages and Dolls" blog for more photos of these journals and links to the participant's blogs.]
My associate at the sewing center made the lace as a test or trial demonstration on the embroidery machine....it did not come out strong enough for the purpose she had intended...so I "adopted it". Now it graces the pages of this journal...just think how long it would have taken the lace makers of old!
Now off to work to see what else from the "trash" or "not quite right" bin might work just fine in a collage! LOL!
