Garden pests......today I found this worm on my tomato plants....well not this exact one, ( I didn't stop to photograph him and start being his friend before I dispatched him to a parallel universe or wherever!).... I began to wonder how the worm found my tomato plant....

Apparently this is how.....his parent left him for me.

Tomato hornworm comes from the hawkmoth...larvae stage, I think. The hawkmoth is about the size of a hummingbird. (see photo)
More uninvited visitors this week. Japanese beetles. So far only 2 have shown up on my cucumber leaves. They have been dealt with. I am trying not to use any pesticides....not even SEVIN. So I must be ever vigilant!
The good news is that a few more tomatoes have "set" on my plants. I fed the plants with fish emulsion and have been gently shaking the branches which have blossoms so that pollination will occur....mimicking the movement by wind which is how tomatoes pollinate.

I've never met a tomato worm I wanted to be friends with either. I'm glad you didn't make friends with him!

I know it is time consuming but that is the best way to get rid of pests. They can sure do a lot of damage overnight though. We had some slugs eat several of our marigold plants overnight! So my hubby went out with a flashlight one night and sent them to a parallel universe! heehee! Good luck!
